New Belgium Brewing – Tour de Fat – Austin (10/18/08)

Posted by youngsierrans on August 19, 2008

This is not a Sierra Club sponsored event.

Please let us know if you’re interested in joining the Friends of the Young Sierrans on a little adventure to Austin to participate in New Belgium Brewing’s World Famous Tour de Fat biking event. Plans wold be to drive down from Dallas on Friday evening, October 17th, and return sometime Sunday afternoon, October 19th. In addition to the Tour de Fat, we’ll enjoy live music and do some day hiking and/or lake/river canoing/kayaking/tubing. Wearing funky-fun costumes (hopefully, group-themed) at the event is required!

We’d probably want to book accommodations (hotel, bike rentals?) sooner than later, so please reply to Peter or Candace with your interest by September 10th. More info on the Tour de Fat can be found on the NBB site or blog.

Location: Fiesta Gardens, 1 Chicon Street, Austin, TX

Tour sustainable gestures include:
• The Tour de Fat crew traveling on B100 biodiesel fuel.
• Bands play from solar-powered stages that are transported in solar-powered trailers to keep the energy flowing.
• Volunteers and staff help compost and recycle waste from each tour stop, resulting in an overall waste diversion rate of 85% in 2006. The waste diversion rate goal for 2007 is 95%.
• 100% of the proceeds ($5 beers) go to local charities.  Tour de Fat admission is FREE!

Cedar Hill State Park Day Hike/Bike (11/17/2007)

Posted by youngsierrans on November 9, 2007

Join us for a day hike/mountain bike event at Cedar Hill State Park on Saturday, November 17th. CHSP is an 1826 acre urban, nature preserve located on the 7500 acre Joe Pool Reservoir.  The CHSP has over 15 miles of bike trails designed by the Dallas Off-Road Biking Assoc (DORBA). These trails are both hiker and biker friendly and wind through native tall grass prairie remnants (some listed as endangered) and upland forests. There are a variety of trail lengths to hike/bike; we’ll determine which to follow at the park.  Let’s also plan to have an optional, picnic lunch after our hike/bike (~1:00 PM?) back at the trailhead.

Please RSVP by November 15th to the Evite or Young Sierrans’ email address. The park is about a 30-40 minute drive from downtown, so if you are interested in ride-sharing please see the link below. All are welcome; you need not be a Sierra Club member to attend.

Date: Saturday, November 17th

Location: CHSP is located in Cedar Hill, TX.  Address: 1570 W FM 1382, 75104. I-35 S to 67 to exit W FM 1382 to park entrance. The DORBA Trail is located on the western side of the park.  Once you enter the park, take the South Spine Rd past the camping areas to the circle drive parking area near the DORBA trail. CHSP link: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/cedar_hill/

Ride-Share: If interested, please see the online spreadsheet for details (be sure to save your changes – ctrl-s). http://www.editgrid.com/user/youngsierrans/Ride_Share_-_Day_Hike_%26_Bike_Event_-_11-17-2007

Urban Assault Bike Adventure Race (6/17)

Posted by candace on June 3, 2007

Urban Assault is an upcoming bike adventure race that I participated in last year. It’s a lot of fun! I will be participating again this year and wanted to be sure that all of you were aware of this event. It will NOT be a Young Sierrans “official” event. Please feel free to check out the below link for more information and to sign up. If you have any questions, please email me (Candace) at youngsierrans@dallassierraclub.org.

The Urban Assault Race™ is a combination of an Adventure Race, Scavenger Hunt and Bike Race. Mental muscle is just as important as ripped quads – teams of 2 choose their own course to checkpoints around the city. The race is well-known for its checkpoints where fun physical and mental challenges must be completed before moving on. Some checkpoints are listed prior to the race, others must be found during the race.

Racers can be ages 7 – 100…anybody can do it! Male, Female, and Co-ed Teams will ride a total distance of 25-35 miles. Family Teams (requiring one racer to be 7-12 years old) will ride around 15-20 miles.

The first team to complete all the checkpoint and return to Start/Finish wins the race! Then the party begins! It is “The most fun you will ever have on a bike”! http://www.urbanassaultrace.com/
