Posted by youngsierrans on January 14, 2009

green-dallas-imageInstead of posting the monthly City of Dallas Brown Bag Luncheon or City Sustainable Spotlight educational opportunity details, I’ve decided to provide the link to the City of Dallas’ Green Dallas “New This Month” Website.

The above site link contains the monthly newsletter which identifies upcoming luncheon or other educational opportunities, in addition to various “green” tips and other “green” community events information.  Before attending an event, be sure to read if it’s open to the public or to City of Dallas employees only.

Use of Geothermal Energy in Texas – Downtown Dallas – 11/20/08

Posted by youngsierrans on November 12, 2008

Brown Bag Luncheons are open to the public and are canceled if there are fewer than five RSVPs.

When: Thursday, November 20th, 2008
Where: Dallas City Hall – L1FN Conference Room B – 1500 Marilla, Dallas, TX 75201
Time: NOON – 1:30 PM
Speaker: Maria Richards, Geothermal Lab, SMU
Reservations: Dayna Cowley – dayna.cowley@dallascityhall.com

Description: Geothermal power is energy generated by heat stored beneath the Earth’s surface.  It offers a number of advantages over traditional fossil fuel based sources as the energy harnessed is clean and safe for the surrounding environment.  The ability to cool and heat homes using these ground source heat pumps is a way to use the ground temperatures right below us to offset the normal electrical needs.  Currently in the U.S there is over 7000 MWt of energy offset by geo-exchange systems. Texas also has the capacity to generate electricity from existing oil/gas wells that are producing fluids and refracturing them to increase water production. In Texas, 1000s of wells produce fluids over 200°F, in fact some of the south Texas wells have fluids over 400°F. Using these resources, the state of Texas has potential to generate renewable electricity from geothermal energy in the near future.
