2014 Dallas St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Volunteer Recycling Team

Posted by youngsierrans on February 22, 2011

The annual 2014 Dallas St. Patrick’s Day Parade (on Greenville Avenue) is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country (~100K people, 100+ floats).  This iconic Dallas event creates lots of recyclable waste AND opportunity for fun!

This will be our 7th year (!!) to help make St Patrick’s Day in Dallas even greener!  We’ve collected over two tons of recyclable materials in that time and are seeking volunteers to join the 2014 Parade Recycling Team to help divert even more from the landfill!

Volunteers can collect recycling from parade viewers, stroll along with our entry to promote conservation and witness the craziness of Dallas’ St. Pat’s parade from inside the barricades.  Volunteers will receive spiffy green t-shirts, and a memory of a lifetime.

2010 St. Patrick’s Day Parade – DSC Recycling Team

Posted by youngsierrans on February 15, 2010

The annual Greenville Ave. St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country (~100K people, 100+ floats). Such a large event creates many tons of unnecessary waste, so we’re SEEKING VOLUNTEERS to help make the parade greener.  Join the parade Recycling Team and help divert as many recyclables as possible from the landfill!

Last year, total recycling collection efforts yielded about 1200 lbs of material. In order to top that number this year, we need YOUR help! Volunteers can collect recycling from parade viewers or simply stroll along with our entry to promote the Sierra Club and conservation. In addition to the satisfaction and fun volunteers will receive from helping at the parade, they will also be given nifty green t-shirts and post-parade concert tickets..

Please email your volunteer interest or questions, with the subject: Recycling Team.  Thanks for your help!

  • Approx. Volunteer Time: 9:30a-1:30p

North Texas Master Naturalist – Calendar & Info

Posted by youngsierrans on November 18, 2009

Looking for exciting opportunities to learn something new about local wildlife or volunteer in the outdoors?  The North Texas Master Naturalist group maintains a comprehensive calendar of events for many of our local environmental preservation and development organizations (i.e., Cedar Ridge Preserve, Native Plant Society of Texas, Texas Master Naturalist, Connemara Conservancy, Heard Museum).  All events are open to the public.

If you’re simply seeking more information on Texas native trees/shrubs/mammals/reptiles, identifying invasive species or educating yourself on the natural history of  North Texas, see the Links page on the North Texas Master Naturalist website.

2009 St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Volunteer Recycling Team – Dallas

Posted by youngsierrans on February 22, 2009

2012 details are similar to below…

_+_+_+_+_

Please join the Dallas Sierra Club for its fourth annual participation (read: we’re in the parade!) in the Greenville Ave St. Patrick’s Day Parade, scheduled for Saturday, March 17th.  Similar to 2008, 200, 2010 and 2011, we’re entering a Volunteer Recycling Team.  The City of Dallas has agreed to lend us a sanitation truck, city staff and blue recycling bags to assist us in our collection effort.  Examples of recyclables include: bottles (plastic & glass), cans, plastic cups, paper boxes (six/twelve pack types), etc.  We will collect these items directly from parade viewers from inside the barricade as we walk along with the parade.

We are seeking volunteers to help in our effort again this year. Total volunteer time will be about four hours, beginning at 10 AM.  Everyone’s welcome to hang out to enjoy some of the festivities or go their own way after the parade.

Participation/T-shirt Info: All participants interested in a t-shirt may have one. If you have one from a previous year, please wear it!

Location: The official parade staging area (where we all need to meet in the morning ) is the old Sam’s Club parking lot (in front of the Vickery Health Center – Storefront #130) which is located just East of the Greenville Ave. and Park Ln. intersection in Dallas (Google Maps link).  The parade is about 2.5 miles in total length and ends at the Greenville Ave. and SMU Blvd. intersection.

Time: All participants need to arrive at our spot in the Sam’s Club parking lot by 10 AM.  Southbound Greenville b/t Park and Mockingbird will be closed by police at 9 AM.  Other surrounding area roads will be closed at 10 AM.

Parking/Transportation: There were over 100K parade attendees in 2008; I would recommend the following options:

1. If you don’t want to worry about parking (finding a spot appears difficult and risky – most retail parking has towing signs; nearby residential apartment parking areas are not recommended by the parade organizers), I would highly recommend using the DART Rail and exiting at the Park Ln. stop, which is about a 1/4 mile West of the Sam’s Club parking lot.  Please see the DART Red Line Saturday schedule for times .

2. The parking lot at the Park Ln. DART station appears to hold about 300+ spots.  This lot will likely fill up early.

3. The parking lot at the Mockingbird Ln. DART station.  As mentioned above, the parade ends at Yale/SMU Blvd., which is about a 1/4 mile North of the Mockingbird DART station.  You could take the rail up to the Park Ln. station from here.  There are about 500+ parking spots in this lot.

I can’t emphasize enough how congested this area will be.  Please plan extra time for parking, general delays and walking to our staging area in the Sam’s Club lot.

Cost: Participation is FREE!! After parade festivities are the individual’s responsibility.

Attire: We’ve asked participants to wear some type of outings attire which reflects the “exploration” mission of the Sierra Club.  Keep it simple, fun and comfortable.  Of course, this is merely a suggestion and is not mandatory to participate.  However, a day pack may be handy to carry any personal belongings you bring.

Alcohol: The parade organizer’s policy appears very strict, and since we’re representing the Sierra Club, I ask that you keep alcohol out of our entry.  There’ll be plenty of time for us to share a pint, or few, after the parade.  We’ll have definitely earned it!  Thanks.

Suggested Things to Bring: water, sunscreen/hat/sunglasses, gloves, cameras, snacks, rain gear (hopefully not!)

Weather: The parade is on RAIN or SHINE.

Questions: Contact Peter at youngsierrans[at]dallassierraclub.org

Audubon Dallas – Conservation In Action Work Days

Posted by youngsierrans on August 25, 2008

If you’re ever in the mood to get outdoors to break a sweat doing some local hiking trail maintenance, look no further than Audubon Dallas’ (site) monthly Conservation in Action Work Days. Habitat restoration & trail maintenance at Cedar Ridge Preserve happens the 3rd Saturday of every month throughout the year, rain or shine. Volunteers remove non-native plants, restore trails, and work in the butterfly garden. Repairing trails reduces erosion trouble spots and removing non-native plants clears crowded trail edges. We’ll provide snacks, water, pruning shears, shovels, and work gloves. All you need to bring is sun screen and bug repellent.

At an elevation of 755 feet, Cedar Ridge Preserve is a slice of the hill country just 20 minutes outside Dallas. Cedar Ridge Preserve is a not-for-profit natural habitat of 633 acres featuring 10 miles of hiking trails, a native plant nursery, butterfly gardens, and picnic areas.

2008 Dates

  • September 20th
  • October 18th
  • November 15th
  • December 20th

Time: 9:00 AM
Location: Cedar Ridge Preserve – Located at 7171 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75249 (map).
