Carl Pope to Visit Dallas – Texas Sierra Club PAC Fundraiser (9/10/08)

From David Griggs:
Carl Pope, our Sierra Club National Executive Director, and Cathy Duvall, our National Political Director, will be coming to Dallas on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 to help us raise money for our “Sierra Club Political Committee of Texas.” As most of you know, this is a critical election year in state politics. Control of the Texas House of Representative is at stake. The Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter has made endorsements and will be playing a big role in many of the campaigns of environmentally friendly candidates in swing districts. Some of those critical races are right here in Dallas and Tarrant Counties. However, our state PAC needs money to be able to make a positive impact. In the past, we have managed to raise small amounts of money that has had minimal impact in races of importance. This year, with Carl’s and Cathy’s help, we hope to increase the balance of our fund dramatically, and hopefully help tip some races in our favor.
Therefore, on Wednesday evening, September 10, several local Sierra donors will be hosting a dinner reception fund raiser for Carl and Cathy at the Park City Club, 5956 Sherry Lane, Dallas 75225, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. This will be a very nice event, and we’d like to have as many folks there as possible to meet and greet them. The national and chapter staff are helping us to invite a number of our large regional donors, and we are also asking some other local political donors to contribute. A full dinner buffet will be provided. Dress may be either “business” or “business casual.”
The fund-raising goal of our campaign is ambitious. Between this event and a couple of others around the state, we are looking to raise over $50,000. In order to enhance large donations, the official invitation that National is printing will have a suggested contribution amount of $500. Some donors have pledged more. However, we are placing names on the invite of all sponsors willing to contribute at least $250. Therefore, if you would like to participate as a sponsor, please let me know as soon as possible. We really need you. If you would like to participate at another level, we need you too. Several members have pledged to contribute $100 or less. This is greatly appreciated. We just need to know if you are planning to attend.
The official name of the PAC is: “Sierra Club Political Committee of Texas.” All checks should be made out in this way.
The Dallas Group Excom earlier this month voted to cover the costs of dinners of five people from the club leadership so that we will be well-represented at this event. One of those spots has been spoken for, and at this writing, four more are still available. If you would like to attend, but are not in a position to contribute, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can save you one of the remaining spots. Otherwise, if you can contribute something, we encourage you to be there.
Please RSVP to David Griggs (email@example.com –) if you can attend and how much you are willing to contribute as soon as possible, but no later than Mon. Sept. 8. Sponsors names will be added to the electronic version of the event communications. Given the mood of the electorate nationally, this may be our best shot to make a lasting difference for the environment in state politics. The Dallas Group and Lone Star Chapter want to help make this happen.
