Non-Sierra Club Outing Canoe Day Trip (4/20)
Posted by youngsierrans on March 20, 2008
Last fall a group of friends took a ten mile guided canoe trip down the Main Stem of the Trinity River (runs south of downtown). While it ended up being a pretty good workout, we had a great experience seeing the city from the inside of the river. I’ve heard interest in taking another trip and have contacted the tour guide at Trinity River Expeditions. For this trip, the plan is to canoe the Elm Folk section, located in Irving, which is father north up the Trinity than the last trip. The put-in is at the California Crossing Park Dam and the pull-out is at the Elm Fork, Old Channel. This trip will be much shorter (5.5 miles) and offers views of different wildlife habitats than what we encountered on our first trip. This trip will be held rain or shine.
RSVP Date: Peter will need FIRM commitments (not $) by April 4th.
Cost: $35 per participant, non-refundable (the tour guide’s policy). Money will need to be received by Peter (checks payable to Peter) by * April 12th * so he has time to mail the $ to our guide to lock-down our date. The price includes the guide, transfer back to our cars and all the necessary gear we’ll require (canoes, paddles, life vests).
Canoe Dates: Base on interest received, we have scheduled this trip for Sunday, April 20th.
Time: Meet at California Crossing Park Dam around 8:30 AM. Trip prep and trip should take about four hours. 8:30 – ready canoes, pre-trip canoe training. 9:15 – begin trip down Trinity. 12:15 – complete trip, post-trip canoe effort, return shuttle to cars.
Process: Please send an email to Peter indicting you’re interested or reply to the Evite. Peter will send you his mailing address in a reply email so you can mail him the $ (checks payable to Peter Wilson) after 4/4. You can also give him the $ at an upcoming YS or DSC meeting or activity before the 4/11 $ deadline.
Things to Bring: water, sunblock, sunglasses, hat, snack, closed-toe shoes/sandals (no flops), maybe pants – sun beats down on legs all trip.
Optional Lunch: Post-trip lunch details are TBD.
For more info see the blog post for our last trip or the article one of our last participants published in the latest issue of the Compass. Trip photos are also available under the Photos category on this blog.
