Slow Food (International/Dallas)

Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic membership-supported organization that educates people about how their food choices affect the rest of the world. They have over 80,000 members all over the world. The Internet resources available through their site are comprehensive and current (some examples: local picks – restaurants, food stores/markets; slow links – food info on just about anything you could ask).

Green Restaurant Association

Dallas is known for having more than it’s share of restaurants. Since the Young Sierrans spend much of it’s social time enjoying them, maybe we should begin advocating a little greening of this dynamic industry. A couple of factoids:

• All sectors of the restaurant industry represent about 10% of the U.S. economy.
• The restaurant industry (#1 electricity consumer in retail sector) accounts for 33% of all U.S. retail electricity use.

The Green Restaurant Association’s mission is to create an ecologically sustainable restaurant industry. Per their site, the GRA is “a national non-profit organization, provides services in research, consulting, education, marketing and community organizing. The GRA utilizes a collaborative strategy that involves restaurants, manufacturers, vendors, grassroots organizations, government, media, and restaurant customers. The GRA’s model provides a convenient way for all sectors of the restaurant industry to become more environmentally sustainable.”

The site contains a list of qualified green restaurants, of which there’s only one in TX (Austin), and the association’s environmental guidelines for restaurants.
