Advocate Magazine – Dallas’ McCommas Bluff Landfill

Posted by Peter on October 11, 2009

MB LandfillDid you know that the average Texan throws away 7 lbs of waste?  Or, that 30 days per year of landfill space are “saved” by recycling materials?

You can learn much more if you get your hands on this month’s great cover story in the local publication the Advocate about Dallas’ McCommas Bluff Landfill, the biggest landfill in the state (15th largest in the nation).  The story covers a wide range of topics, including local landfill and recycling operations, procedures, costs/revenues and general stats; the bioreactor technology (methane gas harnessing for resale) utilized at the facility; and the expected life of this big-business dump.

Be sure to check the “SIDEBAR” stories on the left side of the page (i.e., The Environmental Scorecard, Trash Stats).

This week KERA launched the multimedia project Living with the Trinity that explores the history North Texans’ relationship with the Trinity River. Visitors to the website can explore the geography, ecology and cultural history of the Trinity River through interactive maps, videos and photographs. In addition to a series of radio reports which air May 12-15 on KERA-FM (transcripts & podcasts are available), a television documentary is planned to air in the fall of 2009.

From the site: The intent of Living with the Trinity is to make the Trinity River visible again, to restore the river to its rightful place in the consciousness of those who depend upon it.  In doing so, we seek to connect a knowledge of our historical relationship to the Trinity to the way we live our lives today.  It is our hope that this knowledge will enable all of us to make better choices regarding our future relationship to the river and to the environment through which it flows.
