2012 St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Volunteer Recycling Team

The annual Greenville Ave. St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country (~100K people, 100+ floats).  This iconic Dallas event creates lots of recyclable waste AND opportunity for fun!

This will be our 5th year (!!) to help make St Patrick’s Day in Dallas even greener!  We’ve collected over one ton of materials in that time and are seeking volunteers to join the 2012 Parade Recycling Team to help divert as many recyclables as possible from the landfill!

Volunteers can collect recycling from parade viewers, stroll along with our entry to promote conservation and witness the craziness of this iconic parade from inside the barricades.  Volunteers will receive nifty green t-shirts, day of event sponsor gifts (drink vouchers, working on concert tix, etc.) and a memory of a lifetime.

General Info:

• Date: Saturday – March 17th, 2012!
  
• Approx. Volunteer Time: 9:30a-1:30p (4 hrs) – Rain or Shine!
• You must RSVP to receive a parade access badge.  Meet in old Sam’s Club parking lot by 10am (in front of Vickery Heath Center in strip shopping mall – 8224 Park Ln #130, 75231).  Police begin closing surrounding roads by 9:30a, so please allow ample travel time.
• Use DART to avoid parking hassles (Saturday schedule) – NO parking in old Sam’s Club lot.
• Past Parade Recycling Effort: Photos or Detailed Info (which is similar to this year)
• What to do between now and then?  RSVP to Volunteer on Eventbrite! Share with your friends and social networks (Recycling Team Facebook Page)!

Stroll Beyond Coal – Chisholm Trail – Plano (11/20/2010)

Texans across the state are participating in Beyond Coal community events to call for clean energy solutions in Texas, and raise awareness about the threat that coal-fired power poses to the state’s environment and citizen health. We are calling on our elected officials to stop the coal rush in Texas – 13 additional coal-fired power plants are in the early development or permitting process! Many of these plants will be located SE of DFW and contribute to our already poor air quality.

Join us to Stroll Beyond Coal with other Dallas area folks at our Day Hike on the Chisholm Trail in Plano! Sign the “No More Coal” petition to elected state officials, bring anti-new coal posters for photos, receive free t-shirts!!

Location: Meet in front of the Starbucks/Barnes Noble in Plano (801 West 15th Street, just west of US 75)
Details: We will walk 5-6 miles on a paved path. Bring water. No reservations, just show up. Optional lunch afterward.

DIRT! The Movie & Discussion – La Grange – Deep Ellum

We will be hosting a FREE screening of the film “DIRT! The Movie” and engaging attendees with a post-film panel discussion led by representatives from TX AgriLife Research and Extension Center. Local community gardening and mindful food organizations will also be on hand.

This event is open to the public – all are welcome to attend!

FREE Dave Matthews Band Concert Admission – Eco-Volunteers Wanted

We are working with Effect Partners to gather eco-volunteers to help at the Sept 11th Dallas DMB show. Free concert admission after your shift!  Open to the public; all are welcome to participate!

Guided Tour – LEED Gold Project: Park Seventeen (8/21/2010)

Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of the newest addition to the City of Dallas skyline. Park Seventeen is a modern, mixed-use 2.2 acre development designed by Dallas area architects, Good Fulton & Farrell, and is Dallas’ first LEED Gold high-rise office building. The project contains a luxury Residential Tower (292 rental units), Office Space (360K rentable sq ft) and Retail Space (15K rentable sq ft) in the heart of Uptown Dallas. The property was completed earlier this year and is mindfully designed around LEED CS v2.0 standards. Come learn about the building’s features and innovations while enjoying the views from the 17th-level balcony and the one acre amenity/greenspace deck.

North Texas ecoCommunity Picnic

The Dallas Sierra Club is happy to host an afternoon of fellowship and fun at our ecoCommunity Picnic at Churchill Park in Dallas on May 2nd. This will be a casual event to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day (since most of us may have been busy volunteering last week!) and socialize with other like-minded North Texans who are concerned about our region’s environment. We hope to see you there!

DATE/TIME: Sunday – May 2nd, 2010 (3:00-7:00pm)

COST: FREE! Please RSVP so we have a rough estimate for supplies.

DETAILS: The park has basketball & tennis courts, plenty of field space, a covered pavilion and picnic tables. Additional activities will include socializing, volunteer appreciation, face painting, horseshoes and more! All are welcome to join us – come and go as you wish between 3:00 and 7:00pm. We will be there rain (under pavilion) or shine!

WHAT TO BRING: Your families and friends, own food (charcoal grills allowed/NO GAS GRILLS) and beverages, lawn chairs & blankets, outdoor entertainment, musical instruments, etc. Leashed pets are WELCOME.

DIRECTIONS: 6906 Churchill Way, Dallas, 75230 (map). Churchill Way is about 1/2 mile south of 635/LBJ on Hillcrest Rd. Turn east on Churchill Way. The park is just past the Recreation Center on the Left.
